“Pebbles in Your Pockets” Luke 12:13-21, 31
Message by Pastor Walt Jones
“Pebbles in Your Pockets…” Luke 12: 13-21, 31
Sometimes some of the most powerful lessons in life from the Lord are those things we have heard “time and time again and all along the way,” but… to our shame, never really stopped and applied to our lives. Such is the case, I believe, in this simple, yet straight forward passage from Luke 12. In “Pebbles In Your Pockets…” we are challenged by our Lord to look carefully within our hearts, do a little “inventory taking” and come to realize just “what is really necessary and important in life.”
It would be my prayer this morning, that the Spirit of God might speak clearly and carefully to each of our hearts this morning as we listen to HIs leading.
· Certainly we’ll be happy for the “treasure” we have laid up in heaven while on earth, and joyful for the rewards Christ will have given us… BUT I wonder if we’ll also not experience a “little regret” at not somehow having done more now [in this life] to serve Him.
· In the passage, the problem was one of looking at what “someone else had” and allowing that to become a “focus,” and thus a “stumbling block” for us. You see “greed and envy” are powerful human forces for us to deal with. Wouldn’t you agree?
· This man [in our passage] is NOT concerned with using his “pebbles” wisely. He’s NOT concerned with trying to “help others.” IF he had, he would have shared [what he had] and there would have been room for more. He seems ONLY concerned with “pebbles for himself.” It’s that mindset that Jesus warned us to carefully consider in our own lives.
· The really “foolish,” or dare I say “stupid thing” here is this man’s (misguided) belief that “the future was something in his control.” Do you see that? It’s most important.
· Possessions and things, “pebbles and influences” are not bad things in and of themselves. They are gifts God gives us… to use [wisely] for Him. BUT we’re to seek first His Kingdom… that’s what really matters. TODAY, TOMORROW, and ALWAYS.
· Remember, life for each of us… is more than things we store. “Life for us, is Jesus in our hearts!”
